Meeting with Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Kazakhstan

Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Centre (CARICC) delegation led by Director M. Khamidov met with H.E. Yasumasa Iijima, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Kazakhstan, on 10 February 2026.
During the meeting parties discussed current drug situation in Central Asia, modern trends and challenges related to illicit drug trafficking in the region. Special attention was paid to transnational nature of drug crime and importance of enhancing international and interregional cooperation in combating this sort of threats.
A thorough exchange of views took place on strengthening counter-narcotics measures in Central Asia, including developing analytical capabilities, professional training for relevant specialists, and refining mechanisms for operational cooperation between competent authorities of countries in the region.
In this context parties expressed interest in expanding practical cooperation, including through possible engagement of the Japanese counterpart in implementation of CARICC projects. They also looked into how the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) could help with programs to promote regional security, institutional development, and adoption of international best practices in drug control.
Upon conclusion of the meeting, parties expressed readiness to continue dialogue and develop mutually beneficial cooperation, emphasizing the significance of combining efforts of international partners to effectively counter illicit drug trafficking and related security threats in Central Asia.
